Harris, Hugh

I work in acrylics, watercolors and pen and ink to produce images of the world I experience and want to share with others. While much of my work features nautical subjects related to the waters of the Chesapeake Bay, and seascapes featuring beaches, I have a growing body of new work featuring other settings. My work is representational, yet I use strong colors creatively to express emotion and seek balance of expression. My interest in art dates back to my childhood in Cincinnati, Ohio where I took Saturday classes at the Cincinnati Art Museum, and summer programs at the University of Cincinnati. I am retired after 38 years as a United Methodist pastor, and my formal education was in areas other than art. In 1994, however, I received a certificate in Watercolor from Blue Ridge Community College in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia after completing 21 semester hours of study. During the 1970's I mentored under two Chesapeake Bay artists, James Ware and Martin Johnson, Jr. My paintings have been purchased by private collectors as well as businesses, and institutions, including a painting in Newport News City Hall, three at Regent University in Virginia Beach, and one at Peace College, Raleigh, North Carolina.
